Opening Prayer: Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; cleanse the thoughts of our minds, we beseech Thee, by the inspiration of Thy Holy Spirit, that, being delivered from every unholy motion of the flesh and spirit, we may perfectly love Thee, with a pure heart and sanctified lips worship Thee, and worthily magnify Thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

**Opening Hymn: Ride On! Ride in Majesty   215 (B)

** Invocation: I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. For your steadfast love is as high as the heavens; your faithfulness extends to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens. Let your glory be over all the earth.

**Call to Worship:

M: Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,
C: but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.

M: And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross

C: Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
M: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that
C: Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Reading of the Law: And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. “You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

**Prayer of Confession: Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; An d there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous and sober life. To the Glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

Assurance of Absolution: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of His great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who, with hearty repentance and true faith, turn to Him: have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Hymn: Hosanna, Loud Hosanna 213 (B)

**New Testament Reading: Matthew 21:1-9

Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!”

Reading of Sermon Text: Zechariah 1:7-17; 9:9-12

Zechariah 1:7-17 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet: I saw by night, and behold, a man riding on a red horse, and it stood among the myrtle trees in the hollow; and behind him were horses: red, sorrel, and white. Then I said, “My lord, what are these?” So the angel who talked with me said to me, “I will show you what they are.”

And the man who stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, “These are the ones whom the Lord has sent to walk to and fro throughout the earth.” So they answered the Angel of the Lord, who stood among the myrtle trees, and said, “We have walked to and fro throughout the earth, and behold, all the earth is resting quietly.”

Then the Angel of the Lord answered and said, “O Lord of hosts, how long will You not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which You were angry these seventy years?” And the Lord answered the angel who talked to me, with good and comforting words. So the angel who spoke with me said to me, “Proclaim, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I am zealous for Jerusalem And for Zion with great zeal. I am exceedingly angry with the nations at ease; For I was a little angry, And they helped—but with evil intent.”

‘Therefore thus says the Lord: “I am returning to Jerusalem with mercy; My house shall be built in it,” says the Lord of hosts, “And a surveyor’s line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem.” ’

“Again proclaim, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “My cities shall again spread out through prosperity; The Lord will again comfort Zion, And will again choose Jerusalem.” ’ ”

Zechariah 9:9-12 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim And the horse from Jerusalem; The battle bow shall be cut off. He shall speak peace to the nations; His dominion shall be ‘from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.’

“As for you also, Because of the blood of your covenant, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to the stronghold, You prisoners of hope. Even today I declare That I will restore double to you…”

Ride On! Ride On in Majesty - #215(B)

Ride on! Ride on in majesty!

O Christ, with brave humility,

On lowly colt, your road pursue,

As palms and cloaks are spread for you.

Ride on! Ride on in majesty!

As crowds of people come to see

And shout hosannas, lifting high

Their praise for one about to die.

Ride on! Ride on in majesty!

Ride on in humble dignity,

Behold the ones you came to save

From senseless life and endless grave.

Ride on! Ride on in majesty!

For you have set your people free

And we, remembering all your pain,

Now meet again to hail your reign.

“Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” - #213(B)

“Hosanna, loud hosanna,” the little children sang;

Through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang;

To Jesus, who had blessed them close folded to his breast,

The children sang their praises, the simplest and the best.

From Olivet they followed amid a cheering crowd,

The victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud.

The one whom angels worship rode on in lowly state,

And glad to see the children, slowed down the donkey’s gait.

“Hosanna in the highest!” That ancient song is ours.

We hail our great Redeemer and sing with all our powers;

“Hosanna, Christ, we praise you with heart and life and voice,

Hosanna! In your presence forever we’ll rejoice!”

The Royal Banners Forward Fly - #221(B)

The royal banners forward fly, the cross, their standard, lights the sky;

The mystery; as life was slain, through death, eternal life to gain.

O sacred body, wounded side by cruel spear is opened wide,

That water streaming mixed with blood might cleanse us in the precious blood.

The mystic prophecy of old, which David faithfully foretold;

That God on earth should sovereign be, fulfilled as God reigns from a tree.

O wondrous tree by God ordained, though now with royal purple stained,

Your burden once to all displayed, the limbs on which our sin was weighed.

Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed - #200(B)

Alas! And did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovereign die?

Would God devote that sacred head for sinners such as I?

Was it for crimes that I have done, Christ groaned upon the tree?

Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree!

Well might the sun in shadows hide, and shut its glories in,

When Jesus Christ my Savior died for human creatures’ sin.

But tears of grief cannot repay the debt of love I owe;

Here, Christ, I give myself away as all that I can do!
